Acrylic sheets are commonly used in interior design, display, furniture and industry. Being a reliable acrylic sheet manufacturer, supplier and exporter our acrylic sheets are transparent, lightweight and stronger than glass.
Improper cleaning leads to scratches and damage to acrylic sheet. Cleaning acrylic sheets is easy when you know what not to do.
Why Acrylic Requires a Different Care Method
Acrylic is softer than glass on the surface hardness scale. This is what makes is useful. It can be machined, thermoformed, and worked on-site. But it also means the surface responds differently to cleaning agents and abrasion.
Common household cleaners particularly those containing ammonia, acetone, or alcohol attack the surface chemistry of acrylic. They don’t just leave streaks. Gradually, they cause micro-cracking. This is the most common reason acrylic panels get damaged after installation, and this can be easily avoided.
How to Clean Acrylic Sheets-The Right Way
Step 1: Rinse before You Touch
Make sure to rinse the surface with warm water before using the cloth and solution. Dust acts as abrasives when wiped dry. Rinsing prevents the majority of surface scratches that gather over time.
Step 2: Choose the right Cleaning Solution
Use water and liquid soap for routine cleaning. Use an acrylic or plastic cleaner for deeper cleaning. Don’t use: glass cleaners, solvent-based cleaners and bleach.
Step 3: Dry with a microfiber cloth
Use a microfiber cloth to dry acrylic sheet. Paper towels, cotton clothes and even regular microfiber clothes can leave fine scratch marks on acrylics, particularly when pressure is applied. Be gentle and use straight motions, as circular buffing can pick up fine dust and may lead to more scratches.
Regular Maintenance for Long-Term Acrylic Sheet Performance
Cleaning is necessary, but it’s only one part of overall acrylic sheet maintenance. These techniques will help prolong the life of panels:
Use an acrylic polish or anti-static product periodically. This coats small scratches and prevents static that attracts dust. This is particularly valuable in dry or air-conditioned settings where dust build-up is more common.
Keep protective film on during installation and fabrication. All Tilara TPPLGLAS XT Acrylic Sheets have a protective film. Keep it on until the sheet is securely installed, removing it before the sheet is installed can result in dust, metal chips and inadvertent contact that causes preventable scratches.
Keep solvents away from the installation site. Acrylic is combined with adhesives, paints and sealants. Fumes from other work can also impact on surface clarity. Good site practice matters.
Handling Minor Scratches
Minor scratches in acrylic can be removed with a plastic scratch remover or very fine polishing compound. Use gentle circular motions and wipe away. For more severe scratches, mechanical polish or replacement panels are typically recommended – but if the wrong tools are used to sand them out they will tend to grow in size.
Finding Acrylic Sheets with a Long Life
Maintenance outcomes depend partly on what you start with. Tilara Polyplast manufactures TPPLGLAS XT Acrylic Sheets with consistent thickness tolerances and UV-stabilised formulation. Be it signage, partitions or displays, the grade of the material is important to its performance and surface cleaning over time.
